D&D Classes 101 – The Paladin

So, you want to play D&D but can’t decide on a class because you just want to do it all? My personal favourite of the hybrid classes, the Paladin, has you covered!

They are heavily armoured, sword-wielding, spellcasting tanks that can heal and deal serious damage. With Divine Smite adding damage to blows and Channel Divinity, they are a powerful addition to any roster. Channel Divinity will increase in power and change depending on the oath you take, and as you will learn, your oath is a big deal.

Paladins gain their abilities from their Sacred Oath, a promise so strong it has power. Many pledge their allegiance to gods, but unlike the Cleric, you aren't limited to religious fanaticism to get by. A devoted knight may take “the oath of the Crown”, gaining power from service to their king. Maybe you avoid civilisation entirely, taking the “oath of the ancients” to protect nature and the light.

Or perhaps you broke your oath? As an outcast “Oathbreaker”, your loyalty and devotion are replaced by dark power and avarice. The Paladin class invites roleplay, encouraging you to play your chosen role.

To build your knightly crusader, you can start by putting points into strength. The next priority should be charisma and perhaps some constitution for survivability. Then, with a weapon in hand and your oath in mind, smite away!
