Overview: When Henry I died in 1135 without a male heir, his daughter Empress Matilda claimed the throne — but her cousin Stephen of Blois moved faster and, backed by his brother the Bishop of Winchester, seized coronation. Supporters of Matilda refused to accept Stephen, plunging England into nearly two decades of lawlessness and civil war known as The Anarchy.
Game summary:
- Players are English nobles aligned with King Stephen.
- Across five rounds you expand your domain, fortify and defend your castle against advancing Angevin forces, and assault strongholds loyal to Matilda using built siege engines.
- Score is earned through bravery, loyalty, influence and might; avoid unrest to stay in the king’s favour.
- The noble with the highest combined standing proves themselves Stephen’s most devoted ally and is rewarded with the largest earldom.
